Participant profile
This workshop is targeted towards experienced medical writers and editors whose native language is not English. Native speakers who encounter difficulties with the use of adverbs and tense or need to be aware of the difficulties experienced by non-native English speakers in this area are welcome. The workshop is not intended to be a lesson in English grammar, but an interactive forum on the use of tense and adverbs in our daily work. Participants should be familiar with basic grammatical terms (subject, verb, object, complement, clause, tense, active voice, passive voice, adjective, adverb, adverbial phrase, prepositional phrase); more complex concepts will be explained.

Objective
To provide guidance for medical writers who are not native speakers of English on the correct and effective use of tense and adverbs in English medical texts.

Content
One of the challenges for medical writers who are not native speakers of English is the proper use of tenses and adverbs. In this workshop, we will look at typical uses of tense in different types of medical text and learn how to use adverbs and adverbial phrases effectively. For the pre-workshop assignment, participants will be asked to familiarise themselves with basic concepts of grammar and submit problems with tense and adverbs that they encounter when writing medical documents in English. In addition to presentations on tense and adverbs, the workshop leaders will analyse and discuss selected topics from the participants’ pre-workshop assignments during the workshop. Exercises will give participants the opportunity to discuss solutions amongst themselves and with the workshop leaders. The post-workshop assignment will consolidate the content of the workshop.
