MEDITERRANEAN EDITORS AND TRANSLATORS MEETING: Call for participation

20-22 October 2011, European Institute of the Mediterranean, Barcelona, Spain

Deadline for submission of proposals: 30 April 2011

Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET) is an independent, non-profit association that brings together people who provide language support for international communication in English within the Mediterranean area and beyond. We invite researchers and practitioners in this field to attend the conference and consider sharing their work in presentations or posters.

The preliminary program includes lectures and panel discussions on the state of the art in machine translation, working with texts that need creative stylistic revision, how to identify and evaluate research relevant to language service providers, and peer revision and mentoring among translators and editors. Updates will be posted throughout the spring. Presentation categories will encompass research, promising practices and knowledge updates.

We welcome proposals for practical, research or review presentations that respond to our association’s broad interest in helping English language communication facilitators improve their quality and their ability to respond to clients’ needs. This year's theme invites presenters to explore the interface between research and practice in translation and editing, but we do encourage proposals on any topic relevant to our objectives.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO PUBLICATION PLANNING

03-04 November 2011, The Rembrandt Hotel, London

Conference Ref: A11-4311

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

Good planning can maximize the benefits from publications, avoid missing important communications opportunities and increase the return on investment for clinical trials. On the other hand, poor planning can lead to delays and tension between investigators / opinion leaders and research sponsors and even damage the reputation of your company. Developing and delivering effective publication plans requires in-depth knowledge about how journals and conferences operate and keeping abreast of a wide range of rapidly moving guidelines.

This course, aimed at people who are relatively new to the area, will explain the roles of publication policies, strategies and plans. Participants will learn the ground rules of publication planning, gain knowledge about journals and meetings and increase their understanding about the latest rules and regulations governing publications. In practical sessions, participants will be able to apply this knowledge to create realistic timetables.

They will also gain valuable insights from journal editors and other publications professionals.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

* Staff in pharmaceutical companies and specialist communications companies with responsibility for publication planning
* Medical writers who want to develop their strategic skills and move into publication planning
* Project managers involved with publication planning
* Account managers in communications companies who need to understand how the publication process works
* Clinical trial coordinators / medical advisors involved in publishing major studies
* Executives in major research funders (public, charitable and commercial) who need to develop publication policies and strategies
